Top 5 problems associated with cold storage

The Top 5 Problems with Cold Storage:

  1. Icing up of the evaporator - the evaporator coils become iced up, meaning the gaps between the coils become smaller, allowing less air to pass over the coils to be cooled.  This build up of ice not only makes the evaporator work harder to cool the air, but it also means it either has to go through many defrost stages to melt the ice, wasting precious time to chill the food, or it needs regular maintenance, costing time and money and eventually leading to problems with the control of the air in the cold store.
  2. Slippery floors - the build up of ice not only happens on the cooling coils of the evaporator, but also on the floor.  This build up of ice on the floor can increase the chances of injury, either by staff slipping and falling, or by forklift trucks crashing into staff as they slide across the icy floor.
  3. Frost over packaging labels - cold store staff need to be quick to scan the bar code or packaging code that is on the box of the food item.  When there is a build up of ice on the boxes through humid air being frozen on the surfaces, the labels become unclear, and make it difficult and slow for the bar code readers  to pick up the vital information on the box.
  4. Fog - as the doors open and close regularly, warm humid air is allowed in to the cold room.  With this comes fog - the humid air is chilled and starts to contract and becomes more humid, creating a thick fog that makes it hard for the operatives to work, through a reduced level of visibility.  Naturally, this causes health and safety risks, and can cause injury.
  5. Condensate dripping on to food - as the evaporator goes through a defrost cycle, condensate can drip on to the boxes, damaging not only the boxes but also the food within.  This all costs money and can be avoided with the installation of a proper cold store dehumidifier.
Using the Munters IceDry will substantially reduce the above 5 problems, and can help towards providing a safer work environment.
